Yeah, but I don't think the reader's meant to judge him for that -- it read as more of an unintentional fail than intended to me. It's clearly a world where some criminals are Our Sort of People (Polish guy is) and some aren't (arsey British developer isn't), which come to think of it is a very British upper middle class way of looking at the world.
