English-speaking idol fans do love journalists covering them positively and actively fete the ones that do. The flipside of that is that the music journalists that do have deeper insights don’t want to touch idol fandom with a ten-foot poll because, well.
The sentiment that “RPF fans are the worst beings on earth” in post-social media fandom is directly due to the 1D fan wars, so 1D fandom is especially sensitive to it. As well as the documentary about crazy 1D fans, the Jimmy Kimmel potato, that Daily Dot article …. It’s unfortunate because fandom really is where a lot of internet culture is pioneered and it should be documented. And the intersection of fandom and corporate interests is worth unravelling because some of the most sophisticated corporate PR tactics are targeted at massive fandoms. But until we get some good journalists on the beat it is unfortunately just my 9pm at a networking event rant haha.
