Cherry Magic

I am here, months late (though not that late really, it just came out last October), to tell you that Cherry Magic is VERY CUTE and I enjoyed it a lot.

The premise: as Adachi was still a virgin when he turned 30, he developed the ability to hear the thoughts of other people! Cue the discovery that his handsome, popular, and gregarious coworker Kurosawa is IN LOVE WITH HIM?!?!

It's a light romance show, with 12 eps of 25 mins. All the characters, including the side characters, are so earnest and lovely. There's just enough conflict and meaningful backstory for characters to feel like they aren't a prop, while still being a speedy show. Because of the premise, you get to know the introspection and feelings of characters in a natural way!

I was worried because of embarrassment squick, but it didn't get me at all: the conflicts are all relatively quickly resolved and earnestness on all sides meant that no one was unduly embarrassed.

Nearly all the characters are very earnest (how many times can I say the word earnest? It was my main impression!), and most of the conflict is for various characters to recognize their true feelings and then blurt them out. (It's uh, very jdrama in that way.) So, it's not very deep plot wise, but it did get some interesting perspectives in.

Overall, I enjoyed it a lot! Would recommend if you are in the mood for a light romance with fun side characters.

Okay, I've been charmed by a few of the gifsets I've seen on Tumblr, but I was hesitant about the embarrassment squick of it is all, so I'm so glad to know that it didn't bother you! (Also so glad it's not a real life thing to hear people's thoughts if you're still a virgin after 30 because otherwise I would be screwed. I do NOT want to be inside other people's heads.)

Yeah, I think there is risk if your embarrassment squick is stronger than mine, but it's not too bad! (omg but think of how useful it could be! haha)

If I had complete control over it and could turn it off and on, it would be useful. But if I just had to hear whatever people were thinking whether I liked it or not, I think it would be a nightmare!

One of my reservations about it, is do they address what happens to asexual characters if they turn 30 without having had sex?

The magic system is uh, not very systematically presented. There /is/ an explicitly aromantic (unclear if asexual as well) character though!

I also have a strong embarrassment squick, and 90% of the time when I was worried something was gonna set it off, the show zigzagged sideways into something...earnest (it's just the right word!). The other 10% of the time involved the B plot romance, which was an acceptable ratio to me.

It was SO bite-sized and sweet, I also just watched it - along with, like, four other people I've seen? Were we all just saving it for a post-inauguration endorphin boost or what?

I'm watching it now, and while the acting is more OTT than I prefer (which I think is just a Jdrama style thing), I am finding the A plot bearable embarrassment-wise! The B plot is another story (not enjoying that). Can Tsuge stop acting that way in front of people, please?
