Have you read the book the show is from, The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo? I loved it, and then couldn't really get into the show because the tone was so different. The book is way more spooky and atmospheric at first, and then as she figures out what's going on, it's more of a fantasy/mystery/adventure, with the main character doing pretty much all the problem solving and rescuing herself.
Her next novel, The Night Tiger, was more mystery/psychological suspense/horror, where you can't tell if the magic is really happening or it's imagined, but I still really liked it.
