I definitely do think that’s part of it! The corporate interests want collector fans and not transformative fans, generally. 1D did collab with Wattpad back when the latter was starting out but it was to encourage transformative works that could feed back into the collector fandom machine (you can date your fave etc) rather than the less marketable fringes (any one of the several popular RPF ships).
Maybe one day we’ll have that! In the meantime we get to comb through blogs like crows looking for shiny rocks.
