The Romance of Tiger and Rose
Sep. 26th, 2020 18:34The Romance of Tiger and Rose: a cute and funny drama, but I'd only recommend watching up to ep 16! It loses its charm after that, especially in ep 19.
The premise of the show is that the main female lead, Chen Xiaoqian, is a writing the script for a drama with a stereotypically matriarchal city and a stereotypically patriarchal city at odds; after arguing with an actor on the set about how unrealistic it is, she transmigrates into the arrogant third princess of the matriarchal city, who is about to die!
It's not a show that uh, particularly does a good job of avoiding sexism, but the first 16 episodes have lots of cute and funny scenes that I really liked, and that helped me keep going when I might otherwise have stopped with an eyeroll. After that, I watched to completion because I wanted to know what happens, but the plot and character choices stopped making a lot of sense.
You'll like it if: you want something cute, with pretty people and clothing, and funny scenes. (I have a strong embarrassment squick, so a humor that doesn't rely on embarrassing characters.) You also must be in the mood for romance, love triangles, and unrequited love.
You will not like it if: unrequited love and romance are boring or light unexamined sexism, on the level of standard romcom, is unappealing. If you are triggered by attempted rape treated lightly, definitely stop before ep 19, but the first 16 eps are fine.

Chen Xiaoqian / Chen Qianqian is the main female lead. The person she transmigrated to is rude and arrogant, and so she seems to have undergone a total personality transplant haha. She's naive and kind-hearted, but does the typical transmigration thing of treating everyone around her as NPCs to be manipulated.

Han Shuo is the main male lead. He starts out with a bad opinion of Qianqian, but (obviously) eventually falls in love with her; meanwhile, Qianqian is set on returning home and doesn't love him back.

Pei Heng is the secondary male lead, and truly exemplifies the "second male lead is for the writer" phenomenon. Amazing. He starts out betrothed to Qianqian and has some hilarious scenes where Qianqian behaves... not like an arrogant ass? Who is this girl??
I really liked some of the other supporting characters too. The Chief of Huayuan City, Chen Qianqian's mother, loves her daughters so much, but knows Qianqian is flighty and arrogant. Maybe her always favoring Qianqian would hit wrong if Qianqian was still an asshole, but now that she's the main character...
The secondary pairing is also super cute, but I don't know if it's obvious from the start so I won't spoil it here. It's so good though! One person supports the other in ways that ~no one else sees~. The other sees past societal disapproval to true love!
I watched it on Youtube, where there were engsubs of decent quality, but it must have been removed. It's available via Viki though!
