[personal profile] silveredeye prompted: Birds? :D

Birds are actually a relatively new joy in my life! The downfall was the discovery of borbs (through a fic, haha), and the realization of HOW CUTE THEY ARE.

The best bird season is late fall, when it's cold enough that the little birds get all puffed up for warmth. Second cutest is when you walk by a bush full of chattering birds and then they go silent. I know you're there!

The prettiest bird I've ever seen might be a Steller's jay; the iridescence of its feathers was incredible. I have a Steller's jay feather on my desk and it's so interesting to look at the color shifts.

However, if I look at pictures I've taken of birds... Herons and egrets definitely are the bulk! At least of the pictures that are IN FOCUS, because I'm not great at fast focusing. (What /is/ the trick that wildlife photogs use? I ought to fiddle with this some more.) Those fishing birds just stay so nice and still and let you slowly get them into focus haha!

Below are five pictures from last summer in Portland, Oregon.

My mom has a ton of heron photos from vacations and I had no idea why herons were so important to her -- it never occurred to me they might just be naturally good subjects for wildlife photography because they hold still, lol.

Borbs!

Here's to the inevitable frustration of creeping closer, slowly closer to a nice-looking finch, taking a "safety shot" every two feet while they hop and bounce and generally live their joyous lives until flying away just as they come into proper focus…

I do not want to get too close to birds because I find their behavior hard to read, but I love looking at them from a distance. Your photos are beautiful!

omg so many birds… and seasons… I’m amazed you were able to capture one mid-flight!

The only birds I see where I live are the common local sparrow and what I think is a migrant egret that settled in the tree outside our house 😆 I always get so excited when I see other (lost???) birds in our neighborhood, it so rarely happens 🥺

I just looked up stellar’s jay and they look like the type of birds that would be in a loud and flashy bike gang 😭 I don’t think I want to go near them 😭

birds!!! birds are SO great, and also so hard to take pictures of. I'm in a local birding facebook group that has some people who have spent the big bucks on very fancy cameras that take very good bird photos, and meanwhile I'm like....."that speck in the sky in my phone photo is a bird I swear"

Pro cameras with snappy autofocus, maybe. I am a lazy suburban birder so mostly I just get photos of whatever comes to my feeders (which is still plenty-interesting!)
